On Saturday, October 11, ESoDoc took part in the WeWorld Festival Bologna with the talk “A Chat with the Filmmaker: Turning Memory into Social Change”, featuring Lina Vdovîi (ESoDoc 2020), Chiara Boschiero from Biografilm, and Martina Albini from WeWorld, moderated by Carlotta Piccinini.
The discussion explored the intersections between memory, transformation, and the power of documentary storytelling to foster awareness and social change. Speakers reflected on how documentaries can act as catalysts, not only as tools of testimony but as spaces of cultural and political engagement.
Later that evening, Bologna’s Cinema Lumière hosted the screening of TATA, directed by Lina Vdovîi and Radu Ciorniciuc (ESoDoc 2018), followed by a lively Q&A that addressed violence, hegemonic masculinity, and the ethical positioning of both filmmakers and audiences when confronting violent realities.
This talk marked the first step in a new partnership between ESoDoc and the WeWorld Festival, which aims to explore the role of documentary in amplifying voices, challenging systems of inequality, and shaping social imagination.
The WeWorld Festival (October 7-12) is organized by WeWorld, celebrating cinema, gender justice, and human rights through screenings, talks, and performances that bring stories from the margins to the center.
