It's Not Up to Us

This documentary tells the story of Vitalius and Albinas, a couple who have shared their lives for 53 years. It explores their journey after openly acknowledging his homosexuality and the impact on their relationships, while also shedding light on the hidden, tragic history of Lithuania's LGBT community during Soviet times.

Their story proves that love transcends time, space, and adversity. At its core, the documentary explores the origins of homophobia in the Soviet and post-Soviet world.

The broader issue of homophobia will be woven together with the couple's personal story, exploring how Vitalius realized he was gay as a child, and how, at 18, he met Albinas, the love of his life. The film explores how his family never fully accepted that he was gay, how he carried that pain, and how it continues to affect his relationship with them to this day. With the support of many, Vitalius and Albinas marry in a humanistic ceremony. For the first time, the couple holds hands in public.
