Estonia

I am an Estonian documentary film director, producer, and anthropologist (MA). Since 2001, I have worked on a number of documentary films as a director, producer or editor. My first encounter with social issues in film was when I wrote and directed episodes of a documentary series on the UN Development Goals, featuring topics such as desertification, fighting diseases, and access to primary education. The episodes were filmed in Mali and Cambodia in 2007 and 2008. I then moved on to character driven documentaries. “The Pigeons” (2012) is a story of outcasts living in an apartment-building block, “The Women of Muhu Island” (2014) celebrates women as culture-bearers on a small island. Short documentary "Toys and totems" (2017) ventures to more abstract terrains, making use of stop-motion animation. In my work, I hope and prefer to oscillate between observational and more artistic-abstract approaches. Recently, I have also been involved in offering production and communication services to documentary productions. For example, in 2019 I was a communications coordinator of the Oscar-qualifying, multi award-winning documentary “Immortal” (2019, directed by Ksenia Okhapkina, produced by Vesilind). I’m a member of the Estonian Documentary Guild and the Estonian Filmmakers’ Association.
