ESoDoc 2008 - Session 3 in Catania

session_3The third session of ESoDoc 2008 will be held from October 4-10 in Catania (Italy). The session will take place at Albergo Emmaus in Zafferana Etnea (CT).

Also at this session ESoDoc will host international professionals active in the field of social documentary and new media. The trainers present at session 3 are: Don Edkins (STEPS Project / Why Democracy?), Sally Ann-Wilson (CBA/DFID Broadcast Media Scheme), Leena Pasanen (EDN), Alexandre Brachet (upian.com), Claudio Scotto di Carlo (Bablegum TV), Sabine Bubeck-Paaz (ZDF/ARTE), Katerina Cizek (National Film Board of Canada / Filmmaker-in-Residence), Sibylle Kurz (Pitching.de), Stefano Tealdi (Stefilm), Jörg Grossmann (Green TV).

As last session of ESoDoc 2008, at the end of the workshop 10 project will be presented in a public pitching session which will be held on Thursday 9 at the Aula 1 of the Facoltà di Lingue e Letterature Straniere. The panel will be formed by Donald Edkins, Sally-Ann Wilson, Leena Pasanen and Alexandre Brachet.

During the week in Catania, ESoDoc has organized another public event: Wednesday 8 October, Stefano Tealdi will talk about the experience of Stefilm during an open seminar about the "Documentary production in Italy"
 
This session has been realized with the support of the Provincia Regionale di Catania, Università degli Studi di catania - Facoltà di Lingue e Letterature straniere, Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia, Step1 and Radio Zammu.

Spotting the Right Training
From Script Development to Co- and Postproduction


In collaboration with the Industry Office of the Locarno International Film Festival 2008, MEDIA Antenna Berlin-Brandenburg and MEDIA Desk Suisse, together with MEDIA Antenna Torino, have organised an information event at this year’s festival. A selection of advanced training programmes with various focal points will be presented: BERLINALE TALENT CAMPUS, the ATELIERS DU CINÉMA EUROPÉEN (ACE) management programme, PRODUCTION VALUE, EUROPEAN AUDIOVISUAL ENTREPRENUERS (EAVE) and ESSENTIAL LEGAL FRAME WORK (ELF); for script and project development EUROPEAN SOCIAL DOCUMENTARY (ESODOC), SCRIPT & PITCH und SOURCES2; the fellowship programme NIPKOW; and in the area of new technologies INSIGHT OUT, an initiative of the Babelsberg Filmhochschule.

Following the brief presentations, lectures will be given by two experts from the areas of new media and documentary film, providing insight into the quality of the workshops as regards content. Claudia Meglin, a well-known expert in production and postproduction with international expertise as a visual effects art director, will give a hands-on introduction to “Digital Production Methods”. Hugh Purcell, former managing editor of the documentary department for BBC, will speak on “New Formats in Documentary Film”. As a film director, he has been honoured with a British Academy Award, among others.

Heidi Gronauer @ Festival dell'Economia

Heidi Gronauer will be presenting ESoDoc at the Festival dell'Economia in Trento.
The director of ZeLIG/ESoDoc Head of Project will be attending a round table on the theme "La democrazia del fare memoria": a discussion between experts about the production of documentaries, with a particular reference to the new digital technologies and the production of low-budget documentaries.

Hugh Purcell, ESoDoc Head of Studies, will be presenting ESoDoc at the Guth Gafa Documentary Festival (15-18 May, Gortahork). Hugh Purcell will be attending a panel discussion on the role of documentary filmmaking as a tool for social and political change, focusing on the role of the activist or human rights filmmaker. This seminar will also look at the practical difficulties in making films where production values and style are often sacrificed to the greater goal of portraying struggles against injustice and attempts to bring change.
